Fences
A fence is a black-market middleman who buys stolen items. Each takes one kind — drugs, jewelry, cars, and others not yet revealed — and you unlock them as the story progresses.
Car theft is tiered: old cars open with lock-picking tools, newer and luxury cars need a key cloner you get later, and often carry an alarm and a tracker. Vehicle fences can remove trackers; one car fence, Randy, takes requests.
The WAiNK phone app scans a car before you take it and shows its security, resale value and what it costs to register at Pay 'n' Spray.
The Ultimate Edition's Paradise Garage in Watson Bay has a weapon locker and a secure place to deposit stolen goods before you fence them.
Cash goals
Simply completing missions won't give you enough money to progress the story. By earning money in the open world, you'll be able to advance the story.
Nelson names two earners: stealing and selling cars, and robbing stores. Bigger targets — jewelers, banks, compounds — are on the GTA 6 heists page.
Stolen street cars can be registered as personal vehicles for a fee; high-end cars cannot at first. Garages can be bought, safehouses cannot — Jason and Lucia are on the run.

Keeping what you steal
Cash cannot be deposited from your phone: you have to walk it to an ATM. Get wasted or busted and you lose all the cash you are carrying.
Jason and Lucia can carry two duffel bags, and vehicles hold more by size: none on a bike, a couple in a car, more in a van or truck.
Early on you can keep three personal vehicles. Buy garages around the map to own more, or sell one to free a slot.
Damage lowers a stolen car's value, so drive carefully if you plan to sell it. After selling at a Pay 'n' Spray you must use a different one for a while.
Car fences buy any stolen vehicle and can hand out lists of cars to find; one, Randy, takes requests. Removing trackers is a fence service you unlock later.
